The Last of Us Part II — Ellie

Project OverviewThis is the grand finale of my journey with Ellie and my 9th project dedicated to the universe of The Last of Us. After mastering environments and lighting in my previous works, this final release presents Ellie from two distinct cinematic angles, pushing my technical limits in both character rigging and environmental effects. Every asset in the scene—including the hunting bow, the arrows, and the rifle bolted to her backpack—was fully modeled, textured, and detailed completely by hand from scratch.Technical HighlightsAdvanced Full-Body Rigging & Weight Painting: For the first time, I built a custom digital skeleton and manually painted vertex weights from scratch. The tension in her posture, the natural bend of the knees, the realistic fabric behavior of her shirt across her back, and the anatomical grip of her fingers around the bow were tuned pixel by pixel to achieve lifelike organic weight and balance.Procedural Ground Fog Setup: For the overhead jungle shot, I engineered a complex vertical fog simulation inside Blender 5.0. By isolating the Z-axis via nodes (Separate XYZ and Color Ramp), I forced a subtle, low-lying mist to creep strictly out of the dirt and dissolve smoothly right at the tips of the fern leaves, without washing out the entire scene.Cycles Physics & Denoising: I purposely avoided harsh photo filters in post-processing to preserve the honest, physical light behavior of the Cycles engine, blending cool yellow highlights with proхladny blue hues in the deep shadows. To combat color noise on the dark fern borders, I utilized OpenImageDenoise for the final F12 render, ensuring perfectly clean, smooth gradients.Cinematic Film Polish: Both renders were finalized in Photoshop using a heavy -30 vignette to focus all attention on Ellie and a 15 film grain pass to eliminate the "plastic 3D look," cementing the shots as photo-real cinematic stills.Tribute & AcknowledgmentsThis artwork is my heartfelt tribute to the legendary team at Naughty Dog.Special thanks and deepest gratitude to Olga Andrianova, the Head of the 3D Department at Keeberg.Neil Druckmann, John Sweeney, Ashley Swidowski, Soa Lee
